Where Can I Recycle Old Computer Equipment and Electronics?

Do you have old computer equipment or electronics such as audio/video equipment, PDA's, etc. that you need to get rid of at home? Since most electronics contain hazardous materials (lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.) you can't just throw these items into the trash.

The best way to handle unwanted electronic products is to have them recycled or reused. Enter the Take it Back Network. The Take it Back Network is a partnership between King County, the City of Seattle and Snohomish County solid waste agencies and electronics retailers, manufacturers, haulers and recyclers. The Network provides options for collecting and recycling electronic equipment from computer monitors to your old stereo. The Network members are committed to offering convenient, environmentally sound recycling services. Local Network members have signed an agreement to handle all materials domestically or in developed countries.

To find a recycler near you go to the Take it Back Network web site for King County at: http://dnr.metrokc.gov/swd/takeitback and click on Electronics Recyclers. If you live in Snohomish County they have a web site too: http://snipurl.com/e6n8

Note that not all charities or schools want or accept electronics as a donation. These organizations are not exempt from recycling costs. If left with unwanted electronics, the organizations are forced to redirect money that would have otherwise been used for services. Never leave electronics at any location after hours or without permission.
