Transpose Rows and Columns of Data

Have you ever set up a table in Excel with column headings and row headings only to wish that you had designed it the other way with your choices for column headings as row headings and vice versa?  Guess what - Excel lets you switch row and column headings while preserving your data!  Here is how:

  1. Select your table of data including column and row headings

  2. Copy or cut the data

  3. Pick an empty spot in your spreadsheet where you want the new transposed table to start and click in the cell to select it.

  4. Choose Edit, Paste Special from the menu (or right click and choose Paste Special)

  5. At the bottom of the dialog box click to check  Transpose

  6. Click OK

What previously looked like this:

Jan Feb Mar
red 1 2 3
green 4 5 6
blue 7 8 9
yellow 10 11 12
purple 13 14 15

Now looks like this:

red green blue yellow purple
Jan 1 4 7 10 13
Feb 2 5 8 11 14
Mar 3 6 9 12 15
